My Doctor Told Me I Need an IVC Filter
If your physician has recommended an IVC filter to prevent blood clots from travelling through the inferior vena cava, you probably have many questions about what this device is and what you can expect from its usage.
It is likely that if your physician suggesting that you have an IVC filter placed, it is probably because you are suffering from one of the following conditions:
• A medical history that includes pulmonary emboli that does not respond to medications such as blood thinners
• Prolonged immobility, such as when recovering from a trauma, surgery, or other medical event
• A diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis
Medical situation such as these leave you susceptible to developing blood clots. Your inferior vena cava is responsible for transporting blood from your lower extremities that is de-oxygenated to your heart and lungs so that it can be resupplied with oxygen (and the cycle continues).
If you have already developed blood clots, such as in your legs, you might also know that some clots are painful, especially if they interfere significantly with blood flow. Other clots are found incidentally, and you maybe never even knew you had one until a test for another reasons revealed the clot. In the most serious cases, blood clots can cause serious pain, difficulty breathing (when they move to the lungs), and even death. These serious reasons are why physicians search for ways to protect patients from blood clots.
The filter is shaped like a cone, and made of very thin wires. It might be easiest for you to think of it as a cone shaped basket that lets blood flow through, but is supposed to stop blood clots from travelling too far in your IVC.
If you’ve tried medications or other treatment options, your doctor might decide to try a procedure to have an IVC filter put in to your IVC. You will probably not have to stay overnight in the hospital or clinic, unless you have other health conditions. A narrow catheter will be inserted into your groin or neck area. While you will probably be awake, the area of the small incision will be numb and you might be given some medication to help relax you for the procedure.
Your doctors will also likely use imaging dye with x-rays or ultrasounds. This will help your medical team guide the narrow filter through the inferior vena cava until it is in the correct position. Think of the filter as a very tiny, closed umbrella. Once your doctor has the filter in the right location, he or she will open it (again – think of the umbrella).
You will likely will be able to go home later that same day, and your pain should be minimal. If the filter does the job correctly, blood clots, especially larger ones, should not pass through the filter. This means your chances of cardiac or pulmonary risks associated with clots should be reduced.
