FAQ

Has the FDA Approved IVC Filters?

The FDA has approved several brands of both permanent and retrievable IVC filters. These filters are designed to block blood clots from traveling through the vascular system and triggering embolisms. Unfortunately, despite their successful use in many patients, there are concerns about these filters. The FDA has addressed some of these concerns and issued warnings in certain cases.

How Do IVC Filters Work?

IVC filters are placed in the IVC blood vessel that transport blood from the lower body to the heart. The goal of the IVC filter is to capture any blood clots that break free and prevent these clots from reaching the lung. Unfortunately, the device itself sometimes breaks free and travels the path, damaging tissue along the way. Follow-up surgical procedures are often needed to retrieve and relocate these filters. There are both permanent and retrievable filters in use, the latter of which is used when the risk for pulmonary embolism is temporary.

What Does the FDA Say about the Risk?

According to the FDA, IVC filter use increased rapidly from 1970 to 2007, and despite the problems the device faces, the market is expected to increase. The FDA has received approximately 1000 adverse event reports in the last 10 years concerning IVC filters. The majority were related to device migration, and others dealt with breakage of device components, perforation, and filter fracture. Some patients suffered adverse events due to these incidents and many were forced to undergo expense and risky procedures to correct the problems.

In response to the adverse events, the FDA has expressed concern that many of the retrievable filters intended for temporary use are not removed after risk for pulmonary embolism has subsided. There are long-term risks associated with IVC filters, especially those that are only made to be used temporarily and left in place long-term. Ultimately, the FDA urged doctors and patients to remove retrievable devices as soon as possible after the risk has passed.

Overall, the FDA and those in the medical community still consider IVC filters relatively safe and effective, despite the risks. Some believe the problems associated with the filters are because not all of them are being used properly. Unfortunately, for those who have suffered adverse reactions and were forced to undergo follow-up procedure, the reassurance offers little peace of mind. If your doctor has recommended an IVC filter or you believe it would be a better option than anticoagulant medication, make sure you understand your risks before making your final decision.
