What are the Risks of DVT?
Clots that form in deep veins put you at risk for vein and organ damage, as well as many potentially fatal conditions. There are people who have deep vein clots that never have problems, but they face an increased risk for a variety of health complications.
DVT is deep vein thrombosis. It often occurs in the legs and when it does, you are at risk for pulmonary embolism. This is when the blood clot comes lose from the vein and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs, where it blocks blood flow. It can happens as soon as the clot has formed or later, depending on how long it takes the clot to free itself and move.
About one out of every 10 people who have DVT develop pulmonary embolism.
How Do You Know DVT Has Developed into Pulmonary Embolism?
Symptoms vary from case to case, but if you experience any of the following, there is a good chance you have developed pulmonary embolism and you need to seek medical attention immediately by calling 911 or going to the emergency room:
• Rapid breathing or unexplained shortness of breath
• Sudden onset coughing
• Coughing with blood
• Chest pain that worsens with breathing, eating, or coughing
• Elevated heart rate
Untreated, pulmonary embolism can create a host of other complications, including irregular heartbeat, heart failure, high blood pressure, trouble breathing, and death.
DVT can also cause post-thrombotic syndrome. This occurs when a clot stays in the arm or leg too long and causes damage to the vein. When veins don’t work properly, blood pools in place, instead of being pushed toward the heart.
Most cases of post-thrombotic syndrome are mild, but there are symptoms that can become severe. Sometimes they aren’t noticed for years. About half of people with DVT suffer long consequences in the location of the clot. Symptoms of post-thrombotic syndrome include:
• Skin sores
• Darkened skin
• Varicose veins
These problems can be prevented by treating DVT. There are several things you can do to manage DVT symptoms, and while they might not be enough to stop pulmonary embolism, they can help you prevent long-term damage from blood clots. Keeping your arms and legs elevated while resting helps blood flow, as does wearing compression socks.
You also have the option of getting the clot removed with surgery or undergoing a widening procedure for narrow veins. Some people choose to place an IVC filter that might help prevent blood clots that do form from traveling to the lungs.
