IVC Filter Side Effects

FAQ

IVC Filter Products and their Complications
IVC filters are manufactured by a variety of different companies, but only a few have made retrievable filters. Though there are risks associated with all IVC filters, retrievable filters appear to have the most risk and have garnered the most attention from the FDA and the medical community in general.

The two main manufacturers of retrievable IVC filters are C.R. Bard, Inc., and Cook Incorporated. Other retrievable IVC filter manufacturers include Johnson & Johnson, Rex Medical, Rafael Medical, ALN, and B. Braun Medical.

Several of the retrievable IVC filters are marketed as being safe for permanent use. Some patients have found that once their temporary filter is placed, they are unable to have it removed. It fuses with the vena cava in a way that would make removal dangerous or impossible. The manufacturers claim this is perfectly acceptable and the device can remain in place just as it would if it were originally considered permanent.

Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case. In 2010, the FDA issued an Advisory Letter stating doctors should remove temporary filters as soon as possible. Another letter was issued in 2014 recommending retrievable filters be removed within 29 to 54 days after placement. Despite what the manufacturers had said, the FDA did not deem retrievable IVC filters safe for permanent use.

How Do You Know Your IVC Filter is Retrievable or Permanent?
You can ask your doctor, and you should, especially if your device has yet to be placed. Ask why he or she has chosen an IVC filter to treat your situation, and why he or she has chosen a temporary or permanent filter. Also inquire when a retrievable filter should be removed.

Bard retrievable filters still on the market include:

• Bard G2 IVC Filter
• Bard G2 Express/G2x Filter
• Eclipse
• Meridian
• Denali

According to data available to the public, these devices were responsible for half of all adverse event reports filed with the FDA. Adverse events include migration of the device, vena cava wall perforation, and filter fracture.

The FDA has also warned Bard their Recovery Cone Removal System was not approved and it needed further evaluation for their G2, G2x, and Eclipse filters.

If you or someone you love has or is considering one of these devices, it is important to speak in detail with your doctor about the risks. You might also consider seeking a second opinion. There are instances in which an IVC filter could be helpful, but for many the risks have outweighed the benefits.
