IVC Filter Side Effects
Why are Some Patients Unhappy with their IVC Filters?
IVC filters are used to reduce a person’s risk for pulmonary embolism when deep vein thrombosis is a problem. Whenever there is a greater incidence of blood clots in the legs and lower body there is also an increased risk the clot could break free and cause a pulmonary embolism. IVC filters work by blocking the clot while allowing normal blood flow to continue. It acts as an umbrella or a trap until the clot can break down. IVC filters are used when anticoagulant medication is not an option or when the medication is not enough and further protection is needed.
For decades IVC filters have been safely used in people with chronic risk for clotting issues. In more recent years, filters were developed that were meant to be used on a temporary basis. Many times after an operation or certain injury a person experiences a short-term risk for clots and pulmonary embolism. The temporary filters were designed to offer support during this time.
Retrievable IVC Filters
Temporary IVC filters are supposed to be retrievable. After the threat has passed, the doctor should be able to remove the filter without problems, but many users found this was not the case. When the retrievable filters proved irretrievable, the manufacturers stated it would be safe to leave the filters in place and treat the same as you would treat permanent filters.
Unfortunately, this turned out not to be inaccurate for many people. Their retrievable filters did not behave in the same manner as a permanent filter would be expected to behave and they suffered medical complications, many of which were quite serious.
Warnings about IVC Filters
The problem became enough of an issue that in 2010 the FDA issued a recommendation to doctors and patients that retrievable IVC filters should be removed within the recommended time frame – as soon as the threat for pulmonary embolism has passed. A few years later another recommendation was issued that filters should be removed within 60 days or less of placement for best results.
Users of IVC filters are unhappy with the manufacturers because they agreed to be implanted with the devices based on the fact they were safe overall and they would be able to remove them once their circumstances improved. They further believed leaving them in place when necessary would not be a problem. Now many users are experiencing life-threatening consequences they never expected.
