IVC Filter Side Effects
How Do I Know there are Problems with My IVC Filter?
IVC filters are inserted into the body to reduce a person’s risk of problems with blood clots. Clots can still form once a filter is in place, but the filter is supposed to block the clot and allow blood to continue its normal flow around it. People who have a high risk for pulmonary embolism or who are at risk for deep vein thrombosis are often prescribed IVC filter implantation to reduce their risk.
Unfortunately, many people with IVC filters have found the complications outweigh the benefits. Even if pulmonary embolism was avoided, they suffered a number of problems because of the filter. And in some cases, the device actually caused blood clots to form that would not have been a problem were it not for the filter.
IVC Filter Complications
The complications with IVC filters are fairly widespread. The FDA has received approximately 1000 adverse event reports, about a third of which had to do with filter migration and nearly all of which had something to do with a device moving or breaking.
Patients were forced to undergo additional surgeries to retrieve the devices and correct any problems that had occurred because of device migration. As a result of all the problems, the FDA is now recommending that temporary filters be removed in an appropriate amount of time and that physicians and patients pay close attention to symptoms that could be an indication of a problem.
Patients who undergo IVC filter implantation will be given a list of things to be on the watch for in the days following their procedure. Most of these symptoms are related to surgery and will pass once the insertion site has healed.
It is also important to report any pain, bruising, or bleeding to your doctor at any time after the device has been implanted. These could be indications of internal bleeding, perforation, or device migration and must be treated immediately. Digestive distress and symptoms of an infection can also indicate a problem.
Reduce Your Risk for Complications
In addition to being on the lookout for symptoms, there are also things IVC filter users can do to reduce their risk for complications. Exercise and good nutrition are important for helping you maintain overall health and to help you reduce your risk for blood clots. It is also important to quit smoking if you have not done so already. Finally, make sure you continue to see your doctor according to the recommended schedule of follow-up visits and alert him or her to anything at all that seems unusual, even if you do not believe it is serious.
