FAQ

What are the Types of IVC Filters?

There are numerous types of IVC filters, all of which vary in size, shape, and material. The list below includes several examples, but not all are currently in use today.

Temporary Filters

Two of the most notable IVC filters are manufactured by Bard and are retrievable filters that are only meant to be used on a temporary basis. These include the Bard Recovery Filter and the Bard G2. Two other Bard filters are the Bard Eclipse Vena Cava Filter and the Bard Simon Nitinol Filter, both of which are considered permanent, though the Eclipse claims to be retrievable long-term.

The B Braun Tempofilter IVC was designed to be used only for shorter periods of time and is recommended for implantation of six weeks or less.

Other retrievable filters include the ALN IVC, the Optease Filter – Cordis OptEase IVC Filter, the Cook Gunther Tulip Filter, the Cook Celect, and the Argon – Rex Medical Option IVC Filter. The Cook Celect claims to be designed specifically with ease of retrieval in mind.

Two filters that are no longer sold include the Mobin-Uddin Umbrella IVC filter and the LGM Vena Tech Filter – B Braun VenaTech LGM IVC filter.

Permanent Filters

There are also a number of permanent filters on the market. Some of these include the Rafael Medical SafeFlo Vena Cava Filter, Cook Gianturco-Roehm Bird’s Nest IVC Filter, the B Braun VenaTech LP IVC Filter, the Cordis TrapEase IVC Filter, Titanium Greenfield Filter, and the Stainless Steel Over-the-Wire-Greenfield Filter.

Not all of these filters are made exactly the same way. For instance, some are cone-shaped, while others resemble a jellyfish, and still others look like a tangle of wires. All intend to serve the same purpose: to provide an umbrella over blood clots so they are unable to move through the vascular system and reach the heart or lungs. If this were to occur, it could result in an embolism which is a potentially deadly condition.

Determining whether a filter should be temporary or permanent and choosing which of either filter is right for you is an important decision. You and your doctor should discuss the pros and cons of IVC filters in general, and once one has been recommended for you, you should research that particular option for its benefits and risks. IVC filters can be effective, but they also come with risks. It is important you be sure those risks are outweighed by the benefits of IVC filter implantation.
