FAQ

What Happens If My IVC Filter Fractures?
IVC filters are used to protect against the consequences of a blood clot breaking lose and moving throughout the body. The filters work by capturing the clot and holding it in place until it can dissolve. There are two types of IVC filters – permanent and retrievable. Permanent filters are used when a person faces a lifelong risk for pulmonary embolism and retrievable filters are put in place to help with the temporary risk of deep vein blood clots.

Though many have found filters to be effective, there is some evidence that filters have fractured and portions have moved through the system to the heart, causing potentially life-threatening complications.

Filters are Often a Last Resort
Because of the risks associated with IVC filters, doctors usually recommend anticoagulant medication as the first line of defense. Unfortunately, these medications cannot be used by some people, either because they are ineffective or because they interfere with some other medical condition. In these cases, or when anticoagulants are not enough, IVC filters are placed.

There are general risks associated with the placement procedure, but they are no worse than risks you encounter with any surgery. The main concern about IVC filters is what happens after the placement. Problems with IVC filters include erosion through the wall of the vena cava, as well as migration, obstruction, and clotting of the filter.

Bard, the manufacturer of the Bard Recovery filter, designed its device to be used in cases of temporary blood clot risks, but marketed the filter as safe for leaving in permanently. It was sold from 2003 to 2005. The device featured two levels of arms and legs that anchored into the vein and trapped clots. Unfortunately, these arms and legs broke off and created complications for many users. The design was modified in 2005 to improve resistance to fracture and is now in use by more than 65,000 people, according to data.

FDA Warns Leaving Retrievable Devices in Permanently Can Cause Harm
The issues with the Bard Recovery Filter were so severe the FDA issued a warning to doctors and patients: if a system is retrievable it should be removed within the recommended time period. Despite the general risks associated with surgical procedures, it is worth undergoing a second procedure for removal because the alternative can be deadly.  If you are concerned about IVC filter fractures or you are considering a filter and you want to know more about fractures, contact your doctors for more information.
