FAQ

What Happens during IVC Placement?
Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are used to prevent blood clots from moving throughout the body and triggering serious medical problems. These filters are placed into the IVC blood vessel that transports blood from your lower body to the heart. Filters are made from thin metal wires and usually shaped like a cone or umbrella, though some are more twisted.

Why Do You Need an IVC Filter?
Your doctor is likely to recommend an IVC filter if you already have a blood clot in your leg or if you are facing an increased risk for clotting problems. The goal of an IVC filter is not to eliminate clots, but to keep them under control and centrally located until the body is able to naturally dissolve them. Should a clot break free and make it to your heart or lungs, it can result in an embolism, which can be deadly.

IVC filter placement is relatively easy. A thin plastic tube called a catheter is placed in a blood vessel in your groin or neck. The doctor then uses an ultrasound or x-ray to guide the catheter to the IVC and then threads the filter through the catheter and attaches it to the IVC. The catheter is removed, but the filter stays in place.

Once the catheter is out, the area is bandaged and the patient remains under medical supervision for up to 24 hours. If everything goes as planned, patients are free to return home for the remainder of the recovery period, which usually last just a few days.

Do IVC Filters Have Risks?
The process of implanting an IVC filter is usually problem-free, but there are risks, as there are with any surgical procedure. Sometimes people bleed more than expected during or after the procedure. It is also possible for the insertion site to become infected. Occasionally, the vein is punctured or perforated during the insertion procedure. Rarely are the problems associated with inserting a filter untreatable.

Unfortunately, IVC risks do not end after successful implantation. Some people find they have ongoing problems with their filters and in some cases, the problems are worse than what the filter was supposed to prevent. Some people even develop blood clots because of their filter.

It is possible for filters to migrate to other parts of the body and for a patient to need additional procedures to return the filter to its original location. Filters might also break and cause damage throughout the vascular system, forcing patients to undergo replacement procedures.
