IVC Filter Side Effects
What is the Difference between a Permanent and a Retrievable IVC Filter?
IVC filters have been a tool used for decades to control the risk associated with blood clots. When clots form in deep veins and break free, there is a risk they will block blood flow to important organs, like the heart or lungs. These events can be deadly, so it is important to find the right line of treatment for dealing with blood clotting issues before it becomes a serious medical emergency.
Two of the most common options for keeping clots under control are permanent and retrievable IVC filters. Both work the same, but permanent filters are implanted for the rest of a person’s life and retrievable filters are temporary. Despite the filters working the same, there are several differences other than the length of time each filters is used for.
The designs of the filters are similar, but there are differences. They feature an umbrella-like structure that might be shaped like a cone, a trampoline, or a bundle of wires. The goal is to capture the blood clot and hold it in place for as long as it needs to remain stationary for the body to dissolve it. Sometimes patients take anticoagulant medication in conjunction with using an IVC filter to ensure trapped clots do not increase in size.
How Permanent and Retrievable IVC Filters Work
Permanent filters are made to fuse with the vein tissue so they stay in place permanently. Retrievable filters are supposed to be implanted on a temporary basis, but there are instances in which scar tissue has fused with the temporary filter, making it difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Manufacturers have stated this is not dangerous and temporary filters can be left in place permanently, but there are many risks involved when this occurs. The FDA has even warned against the practice and issued a specific recommendation to remove retrievable filters as soon as necessary.
Risks of Retrievable IVC Filters
Due to how they are designed and constructed, there is a greater chance the retrievable filters will fracture or break free completely and travel to other locations in the body. The longer a filter remains in place the greater the likelihood this will occur. Not only is this dangerous and puts patients at risk for potentially fatal complications it also means at least one additional surgical procedure will be required to correct the problem. The dislocated filter will need to be found and put back in place or repaired, or removed all together if that’s what the patient chooses.
