Should I treat my DVT with an inferior vena cava filter?
Your treatment options for deep vein thrombosis range from special stockings to medication to a filter to major surgery. It is the role of your physician to help you weigh the pros and cons of each approach and decide which one is most appropriate for your specific medical condition.

Usually deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is first diagnosed when symptoms such as leg pain and swelling happens. Some patients are not diagnosed until a blood clot in your body moves to a major organ and causes a stroke (brain), heart attack (heart), or pulmonary embolism (lungs). If your symptoms are more mild and do not require emergency attention, your doctor will also an assessment of your overall health and conduct a physical exam. This exam might include tests such as a duplex ultrasound or venogram. A duplex ultrasound allows your doctor to measure circulation in your veins, and can sometimes even help identify the location of clots. A venogram is an X-ray that actually lets your doctor see the structures of your veins. It also uses a contrast dye.

Once your doctor confirms the diagnosis of DVT, the next step is to make a treatment plan. Most often patients respond well to medications. You might start with injections of heparin, an anticoagulant that helps stop your blood from clotting at such a high rate. Heparin can prevent new clots from forming, but it cannot diminish the size of clots with which you are already dealing.

A second type of medication you might receive is warfarin. This medication is intended for longer use than heparin. You will need to have your anticoagulant levels measured on a regular basis, as the medications can cause serious situations of excessive bleeding.
In conjunction with medications like these your doctor might have you use a compression machine. This will happen when you are in the hospital, perhaps undergoing other procedures that leave you fairly immobile. If these combinations of treatment plans are not successful for you, your doctor might suggest that you consider an inferior vena cava filter.
What can an inferior vena cava filter do for me?

An inferior vena cava filter can offer your protection from pulmonary embolisms. The metal filter cannot break up clots and it cannot stop clots from forming. A vascular surgeon can implant the filter via a catheter inserted in your leg or neck. The procedure is relatively short in duration.

The IVC filter will act to grab clots and keep them at bay from entering your venous system any further. Complications are rare, but include such things as injury to the vein, malposition of the filter, and migration of the filter.
