FAQ

What is an IVC Filter?
IVC filters are inserted into the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from moving throughout the body. The inferior vena cava is the largest vein in the human body and is responsible for carrying de-oxygenated blood from the lower part of the body to the right atrium of the heart and then onto into the lungs. When a clot forms and breaks free, it follows the path of this blood, putting a person at risk for serious medical complications.
IVC filters are used to prevent problems from blood clots – problems that can be deadly. If the pulmonary arteries become blocked, it can lead to difficulty breathing, cause chest pain, or even be fatal. The filter allows blood to continue traveling around the clot and over time, the clot breaks down on its own and is no longer a threat.

Who Should Consider an IVC Filter?
Those who are at risk or experiencing deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism are considered ideal candidates for IVC filter placement. Filters are also recommended for those at risk for pulmonary embolism who are unable to tolerate anticoagulation therapy, those who experience bleeding complications from anticoagulation, and those with large clots already formed in the vena cava.

An IVC filter is placed through an endovascular procedure, which means it is inserted via a blood vessel, such as the femoral artery or internal jugular vein. Patients are given local anesthetic at the location of insertion and are usually sedated for comfort, but still awake. Once the filter is placed, patients remain in the hospital for at least 12 hours, but usually a full day. Normal activity is permitted within a day or two, assuming there are no complications.

What are the Risks of IVC Filters?
Though effective for many people, IVC filters do pose a number of risks. It is possible to experience complications during placement, such as an allergic reaction, excessive bleeding, or vein damage.

IVC filters can also cause complications once they are in use. Sometimes they are responsible for causing the exact problem they are intended to control – blood clots. Filters can also shift after surgery and need to be captured and repositions. It is possible for a clot to still bypass the filter and cause a pulmonary embolism, but filters reduce the risk. Some patients have found their IVC filters created more problems than they had prior to placement and regret their decision to be implanted. It is important to discuss all of the risks with your doctor before agreeing to IVC filter use.
