FAQ

What is Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) occurs when blood clots form in the deep veins within the arms, pelvis, or legs, and travel to the lungs or heart. When clots form within the deep veins of the upper and lower extremities or pelvis, the condition is known as deep vein thrombosis. Blood clots can form anywhere in the body at any time, but they are usually not a problem unless they occur in the deep veins. Even deep vein clots are not life-threatening automatically, but they can be if they travel to the lungs and trigger a pulmonary embolism. This occurs when the clot blocks normal blood flow to the lungs.

Managing Venous Thromboembolism
It is possible to manage venous thromboembolism and deep vein thrombosis, but there is no guarantee complications will not occur even when clots are managed. The main goal of treating blood clotting issues is to reduce the chances future clots will form and prevent existing clots from enlarging.

Most of the time, the first line of defense against either of these events is anticoagulation therapy, which involves taking a prescription blood thinning medication on a daily basis. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to use blood thinners. For instance, those who have recently undergone certain types of surgery and need to be careful about bleeding issues might not be good candidates for anticoagulants.

IVC Filters for Venous Thromboembolism
Another option for managing venous thromboembolism and deep vein thrombosis is with IVC filter implantation. The IVC filter is an umbrella-shaped metal device placed in the inferior vena cava. It captures clots that have formed and broken free, blocking them and preventing them from reaching the lungs, while still allowing normal blood flow in the veins.
Doctors might prescribe IVC filters for patients with recurrent VTE that are not good candidates for blood thinners, or who cannot take blood thinners for other reasons.
Unfortunately, the insertion of an IVC filter does not guarantee your problems are over when it comes to blood clots and deep vein thrombosis. In some cases, IVC filters have triggered the formation of clots and caused problems that would otherwise have not been an issue. There are also instances of the filters breaking or breaking free and migrating in part or in whole to other parts of the body. When this occurs, the filter can block blood flow or puncture soft tissue in the body. Patients with IVC filters must always be on guard for symptoms related to a migrated or broken device.
