FAQ

Why Should I Remove My IVC Filter?
IVC filters are put in place to prevent complications from blood clots. Clots can still form, but the filter prevents them from reaching an area of the body where they would cause damage, such as the heart. Blood flows around the filter and over time, the body naturally dissolves the clot.

Many people have found IVC filters to be useful in helping them manage their risk with deep vein blood clots, but they are not 100% effective. As a matter of fact, the FDA has received more than 1000 adverse event reports and some estimates show as many as 50% of all IVC filter patients experience complications.

Removing the IVC Filter
Some IVC filters are retrievable, so when they are implanted the procedure is done with the intention of one day removing the filter. Once the need for protecting against the heightened risk for blood clots has passed, your doctor should recommend removal. There are times when it is not safe to remove a filter, so the removal could be postponed. For instance, if a person has developed an illness that makes it difficult to perform surgery, removal might be put on hold until the illness clears up.

Filters are removed using a process similar to implantation. Contrast dye is injected near the filter so the doctor can see there are no clots and the procedure can be performed safely. A catheter is inserted and the filter is removed through an incision similar to the one used during placement. There is a short recovery period during which the main concern is protecting the incision and preventing infection.

An IVC filter might also need to be removed if it breaks or migrates to a new part of the body. Some doctors return the original intact filter to its location when possible, but if the filter breaks it will need to be replaced. Some patients choose to undergo the removal process without replacing a broken or migrated filter because the risks of which they were previously unaware now concern them. Determining how to proceed after an IVC filter breaks or migrates is a decision that should be made between you and your doctor.

FDA Warns about Removal of Retrievable Filters
There are instances in which patients have been promised removal at the time of insertion and later the removal procedure was never scheduled. If you have a retrievable IVC filter, it is important you discuss removal with your doctor. In light of the complications, the FDA now strongly recommends removal of all IVC filters that were never meant to be permanent.
