FAQ

Are IVC Filters the Best Option for Treating DVT?
Though retrievable IVC filters are an option for treating DVT, most medical professionals would agree they are rarely the best option. In addition to presenting a variety of risks, IVC filters are arguably ineffective for dealing with DVT and pulmonary embolism. If your doctor has recommended an IVC filter, what should you know?

IVC filters work by blocking blood clots in the veins. They are implanted laparoscopically and attach to the walls of the vein with wire legs and arms. Most are shaped like cones or umbrellas, but some look more like jelly fish or a tangle of wires.

Placement of IVC Filters
The placement procedure is relatively simple and features mainly the risks associated with a laparoscopic procedure. It is possible the veins or organs could be injured during placement, but this is rarely the case when experienced doctors perform the surgery. The recovery period is brief and most people are able to return to normal activities within a week of placement.

The main issues with IVC filters arise once the filter is in place. This is especially true when a retrievable filter is used. Retrievable filters are only temporary. They are used to treat a short-term risk for blood clots – the kind that might occur after surgery or an injury.
Unfortunately, it is possible for retrievable IVC filters to adhere to the vein with scar tissue and become very difficult to remove. Some manufacturers have recommended leaving temporary filters in place and treating them like permanent filters, but this has proven to be dangerous.

Temporary and permanent filters are similar, but there are differences in construction. Left in place too long, temporary filters tend to fracture, which means pieces break off and travel through the vascular system. These pieces can attach in other locations and create serious medical problems.  There are also problems with filters migrating to other areas of the body when they do not attach properly. This usually occurs shortly after placement, but an older filter can detach and create the same problems.

What is Your Best Choice for Treating DVT?
So are IVC filters even worth considering for DVT treatment? There are other options and if those other treatment options work for you, it is best to at least begin with those.
If your doctor has advised you a filter is your only choice, it might be worth considering, but it is also important to consider the variety of complications you could experience once a filter is in place.
