FAQ

Are the Placement Procedures for Temporary and Permanent IVC Filters the Same?
IVC filters are used to reduce the risk of complications from blood clots. Though clots can form at any time and many of them are not that serious, it is possible to develop a blood clot in the deep veins of the legs or lower body that presents a major health danger. These deep vein clots have the ability to break free and move through the vascular system to the heart. If they create a blockage of blood flow it can trigger a pulmonary embolism. The goal of the IVC filter is to prevent this from happening.

IVC filters do not prevent blood clots. They capture them and hold them in place until they gradually break down. This ensures blood continue to flow normally, despite the presence of a clot.

Permanent and Temporary IVC Filters
Filters can be permanent or temporary. Permanent filters are put in place when the risk for pulmonary embolism is chronic and expected to last for the rest of a patient’s life. Temporary filters can be removed and are called retrievable. They are used when the risk for pulmonary embolism is short-term, such as after an injury or surgical procedure.
The placement procedures for permanent and retrievable IVC filters is essentially the same. The filters are different because of how they are made, which has little to do with the placement of the device. Retrievable filters are designed and constructed to be easily removed after a few weeks, though this is often not the case.

Issues with Removal of IVC Filters
Several recipients of retrievable filters have experienced issues with removal. This is due in part to scar tissue forming around the device, making it difficult or impossible to safely remove. The manufacturers of these devices claim that leaving them in place is the best option in these cases, but many in the medical community, including the FDA, disagree.
In the past decade, the FDA has issued to warnings to doctors and patients about retrievable IVC filters. The first was the recommendation that the retrievable filters be removed as soon as possible – after the threat for pulmonary embolism passes. The second warning was more specific and encouraged doctors to remove the retrievable devices within 30 to 60 days whenever possible.

If you have learned you need a retrievable IVC filter, make sure you speak with your doctor about the risks and determine the plan for removal. For many of these devices, the sooner the better when it comes to removing.
