FAQ

Which Should I Choose: A Permanent or Temporary IVC Filter?
This question will come down to a decision between you and your doctor, but it is important beforehand to understand the differences between the two filters.
IVC filters are used to prevent blood clots from causing potentially deadly complications. Filters do not prevent clots from forming, nor do they dissolve clots. Instead, they capture a clot on the move and hold it in place until the body naturally dissolves it and it is no longer a risk. This ensures blood flow continues even when a clot is present.

Permanent and Temporary Filters
There are both permanent and temporary IVC filters. Temporary filters are called retrievable because once they have served their purpose they are meant to be retrieved and removed. They are a relatively new development, whereas permanent filters have been in use for several decades.

Retrievable filters have increased in popularity in recent years, in part because they offer an alternative for preventing pulmonary embolism when the risk is temporary. Someone who is otherwise rarely at risk for pulmonary embolism might see a spike in risk following an injury or surgical procedure. And if anticoagulant medication is not an option – as it often is not following surgery – a retrievable IVC filter might seem like a great idea.
Unfortunately, there have been a number of complications associated with the use of temporary filters and many are now wondering if the use of them is worth the risk.

Not Designed for Permanent Use
These filters are designed similarly to permanent filters, but have some differences. Since they are intended to be used for just a short time – usually a few weeks – they are not designed to implant permanently into the vein. This make retrieval easy without sacrificing the function of the filter.

In some, though, scar tissue has formed around the temporary filter, making it difficult to remove. Manufacturers have stated it is perfectly safe to leave a temporary filter in place as if it were a permanent filter, but the FDA and many medical professionals disagree. It is possible for pieces to break off from the filter and move to other parts of the body, causing injury that could be potentially life threatening.

In addition to the device breaking, it is possible the entire filter will dislodge from its intended location and move to another place in the body. This not only puts a user at risk for injury, it also means there is no longer any protection in place against pulmonary embolism.
