FAQ

What is DVT?
DVT is short for deep vein thrombosis, which describes a blood clot that forms in a deep vein. This usually occurs in the legs. Though not all blood clots are dangerous, DVT is dangerous because the clot can break free and travel through the blood stream to the lungs. If the clot blocks blood flow in the lungs it causes pulmonary embolism, a potentially deadly condition. DVT can also cause chronic problems, including swelling, pain, and color changes in the legs. As many as 600,000 people develop DVT each year.
Symptoms of DVT can include achiness, swelling, warmth in the legs, and pain when moving or standing, but it can also present no symptoms. Sometimes, the only way a person discovers the presence of DVT is because of a pulmonary embolism. It is usually smaller deep vein clots that don’t cause any noticeable symptoms.

What Causes DVT?
There are a number of things that can trigger a blood clot to form in the deep veins of the legs, including
• Slowed blood flow from inactivity
• Abnormal clotting problems
• Injuries to blood vessels

It is possible to treat the risk for DVT and reduce the risk for pulmonary embolism. Many doctors will address DVT risk following an event and take preventative measures to stop the problem from appearing. For instance, some doctors recommend preventative DVT treatment following operations that require a long and restrictive recovery period.

Reducing Your Risk for DVT
There are several things you can do to reduce your risk for DVT and pulmonary embolism. Taking anticoagulant is one of the most popular aggressive treatments, but it is not full-proof and it does not guarantee a blood clot will not form. Some doctors recommend IVC filters to stop blood clots that do form from moving to dangerous areas of the body.
Exercise is another option for preventing DVT. Your doctor or nurses can work with you after surgery or injuries that leave you bedridden and unable to move normally. DVT is also why people are encouraged to get out of bed and get moving as soon as possible following surgery. Until that is possible, compression socks can help prevent DVT. Some hospitals even use automatic compression boots following surgery to keep blood circulating and reduce the risk for clotting when patients face the most risk.

If you are concerned about DVT or you believe you have developed a blood clot in your legs, you should seek medical attention immediately.
