FAQ

Recovery from an IVC Filter Procedure
Patients scheduled for an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter procedure often wonder what to expect during the procedure and afterwards in the recovery. While this is generally considered a minimally invasive surgery, often done as an outpatient, there are several things that patients can do to help reduce risks and complications during the procedure and the recovery procedure.

Improving Recovery
The first steps to improving recovery after the inferior vena cava procedure actually begin before the appointment. These involve:

- Making sure the healthcare staff is aware of any potential allergies to iodine
- Having a complete physical exam to identify any potential complicating conditions
- Undergoing testing such as electrocardiograms and blood panels so that there is a baseline for comparative measures should complications arise after the procedure

What to Expect During Recovery
The actual procedure only takes about one hour. During recovery from an IVC filter placement patients should experience minimal pain. If anesthesia is used, the patient will likely need to spend an hour or two in a recovery room while the anesthesia wears off. From there the patient may be sent to a separate room to more fully recover and remain for one night of observation. During this period the patient is usually asked to limit movement to basic ambulatory activity. Typically patients can expect to be able to return to regular activities in one to three days.

For those patients who were only lightly sedated during the procedure, the recovery time is shorter. These patients may even go home later than same day. Patients may be advised to limit heavy lifting for a specified amount of time in order to minimize bleeding and bruising at the catheter site.

Once at home, the patient should be soon back to normal activities. He or she should not actually “feel” the device, as it is extremely small. Signs during recovery that something may be wrong with the filter include:

- Pain at the site where the catheter was inserted. This may or may not be associated with redness, swelling, or oozing from the site. These signs can signal an infection.
- Swelling in the extremities. This may or may not be associated with pain, redness, or a sense of heat. This could signal that there is a blockage restricting blood flow.
- Pain in the chest, occasionally associated with difficulty breathing. This could indicate that a clot has been able to move past the filter, or that the filter itself has migrated to the heart or lungs. This is a potentially fatal incident and these symptoms should be immediately reported or patients should call 911.

The recovery from IVC filter placement is often uneventful. Any concerns should be reported immediately to a healthcare provider.
