FAQ

After an IVC Filter: What to Expect
A device called an IVC filter is used to treat conditions where blood clots pose risks to the hearts and lungs of patients. These clots, when they move through the inferior vena cava (IVC), can cause blockages near or in these vital organs, with catastrophic results. The IVC filter’s design resembles a cone shape, and it is developed using narrow wires to create a mesh-type basket. In this basket is where the clots are supposed to catch, until the time when the body’s natural anticoagulant agents break them down and allow them to safely pass.

Patients who elect to have the IVC filters implanted should be aware of the risks associated with the device: allergic reactions to the contrast dye, excessive bleeding during the operation, damage to a vein, or injuries to the sites of catheterization.
After an IVC filter is implanted, there are several outcomes of which patients should be aware.

Typical filters are not intended to be removed. Sometimes, however, the filters shift out of position and physicians need to reenter the IVC to grab and reposition the device. The longer a patient has an IVC in place, the less likely free movement is and the more challenging it becomes to purposefully move or remove the device.

The devices cannot stop all clots from moving through the inferior vena cava, but the risks are significantly lower that a large clot will move through the filter and cause damage to the heart or lungs.

There is a risk of damage to the place in either the neck or groin where the catheter is inserted.

Patients who engage in poor health decisions, such as smoking, poor eating habits, and inadequate exercise programs, tend to see poorer results with the IVC filter usage.

Patients need to attend follow-up appointments. Doctors will continue to monitor their patients with IVC filters in place.

The immediate recovery period for IVC filter surgery is relatively short – just a couple of days before normal activity is often resumed. However, there are some warning signs that patients and their caregivers should be on the lookout for during recovery.

-Pain in the chest, with or without shortness of breath
-Pain or numbness in an arm or in a leg
Limbs that become abnormally cold, often accompanied by a change in color as well (blueness)
-Bleeding, excessive bruising, or signs of infection at the site where the catheter was inserted
Patients should consult their doctors immediately if any of these warning signs are noticed.
