FAQ

What Can I Expect with My IVC Filter Retrieval?
There are several reasons why your physician has decided to remove your IVC filter. You may have only had it inserted to deal with an immediate risk associated with temporary immobility. Perhaps you can now take blood thinners effectively where before you were unable to due to another health concern. It may even be that you originally expected to have the filter in place permanently, but it has migrated, fractured, or you just no longer have the same health issues. Whatever the reason, your retrieval procedure will likely include a same-day procedure which has similar steps and complication rates as the original procedure you experienced to insert the filter.

Before your retrieval IVC filter surgery, you will probably be sent for an ultrasound of your legs to make sure that no blood clots continue to exist in this region, which would warrant leaving the filter in place. You might also need to have a CT scan of your abdomen. This helps your medical team visualize the current location of the filter. Other standard tests associated with the retrieval process include blood work, an EKG, and blood pressure measurements.

You will be advised about dietary restrictions. This is needed for the light sedation. You will also be asked to arrange transportation home after the procedure. Once you are in the procedure room you will have the site cleaned and numbed, and then given the sedation. A catheter will be inserted. You should not feel any pain, but you might feel pressure at this area.

If there is a significant amount of scar tissue expected, the retrieval process will likely include an endovascular sheath, which allows a laser to be used to gently diminish the scar tissue and make retrieval safer. This procedure will likely be done with guided imaging and contrast solution. After the IVC filter is removed, pressure will be applied to the catheter site to minimize bleeding. A small bandage will be applied. You will receive specific instructions regarding the aftercare. Your recovery time should just be about one or two hours at the clinic or hospital. If you are an inpatient you will then be sent back to your room.

If you are an outpatient, you will have your friend or family member drive you home, where you can resume your regular diet, unless directed otherwise. Do not plan to do any heavy lifting or exercise for the first few days. Drink plenty of water to help flush the contrast solution from your system.

Contact your doctor right away if you notice any of the following complications which might arise from your IVC filter retrieval procedure:

• Bleeding through the bandage
• Swelling at the catheter site
• A fever
• Increasing levels of pain or discoloration at the catheter site

Following your procedure you will make arrangements for a post-operative visit.
