Five Reasons an IVC Filter is a Big Risk
IVC filters can help protect against complications related to deep vein thrombosis and blood clots, but they can also pose a risk to users. What are some of those risks?
1. Surgical Complications
IVC filters are implanted surgically and as with any surgery, there are risks associated with the process. Things can go wrong during the implantation or you could react poorly to the anesthesia, contrast dye, or device. In most cases, you won’t know there is a problem until you are undergoing the procedure. Doctors have a plan in place for combatting complications, but make sure you are aware of what could happen before undergoing IVC filter placement.
There can be two problems with adhesion. First, if the filter does not adhere properly to the vena cava it will not stay in place. Second, retrievable filters could adhere too well because of scar tissue and be difficult to remove.
Fracture occurs when a part of the IVC filter breaks off from the main device and travels to another part of the body. The filters are made from metal wire and in some cases, considered fairly breakable. If the fractured part punctures tissue or an organ, or implants itself elsewhere, you could suffer a great deal of pain and face a potentially fatal risk.
The risk is just as high with migration. Fracturing involves just a piece of the device migrating, but device migration is possible and involves the entire device relocating itself. This occurs when the filter is no longer properly adhered to the vena cava. It can be extremely painful and if it damages an organ, could result in fatal consequences. It is important to know the signs and symptoms of device fracture and migration, just in case you need to seek medical attention.
One of the reasons migration is extremely dangerous is because it exposes the patient to the exact problem the filter was intended to treat – pulmonary embolism.
IVC filters do nothing to stop blood clots from forming. They merely keep a blood clot in a safe place until it dissolves. When the filter malfunctions the patient is just as exposed to danger as he or she would be if no filter had ever been placed. Worse of all, if the device fails and the patient is unaware for a long period of time, the likelihood an embolism will occur is high.
