FAQ

IVC Filters
IVC filters are one approach to combatting the risks associated with blood clots of the inferior vena cava. This vein is the largest in the body and takes blood from the lower parts of the body and sends it to the heart and lung for re-oxygenating. Patients who develop clots in the IVC are in danger of different symptoms and consequences. The IVC filter is one attempt to catch these blood clots before they move to the heart and lungs.
Inferior vena cava filters are made from thin wires, formed in a cone shape. This shape is designed to help the filter catch and stop blood clots from moving from the lower extremities to the organs. If blood clots do pass to the heart or lungs they can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath and pain in the abdomen or chest. In severe cases the clots can interfere so severely with body functions, even causing death.
Several different factors cause patients to need resources like IVC filters. Some of these factors include:

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
• History of pulmonary embolus
• Event of trauma
• Situation of immobility for extended period of time
• Recent surgeries or medical situations

Usually medications are the first lines of defense in treating situations such as these events. However, not all patients are candidates for these medications, and not all patients respond appropriately to blood thinning agents or other similar treatments.  If a surgeon determines that an IVC filter is an option, the surgical procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis. The patient is given a numbing block to the incision location, most often along the groin. Sometimes, though, the neck is the better option through the jugular. In either event, once the location is numb the surgeon uses contrast dye and guided imaging (ultrasounds or x-ray) to move through the vein to the point of insertion. A catheter that is about 1/8” in diameter is used to transport the IVC filter. Once in place, the surgeon releases the filter where it expands, and then should remain in place to catch the blood clots before they can reach the heart or lungs.

Patients usually go home after several hours of observation, although they generally should have a plan that includes a driver and someone to stay with them for the first 24-48 hours, depending upon specific instructions. Some patients with other health conditions or risks need to remain overnight for observation. Recovery pain is typically minimal or non-existent.

IVC filters are generally designed for lifelong use, as the longer they remain in place the more difficult it is to remove them. In some situations, such as when patients can large amounts of blood clots getting caught in the filter, surgeons are forced to try to remove the IVC filters.
