Five Things to Be Concerned about If You Have an IVC Filter
If your doctor has recommended the placement of an IVC filter to help you manage your risk for pulmonary embolism due to blood clotting issues, there are several things you should know. IVC filters can be safe, but there have also been many instances in which they caused users a great deal of pain and frustration.
What should be your primary concerns if you are considering or have recently received an IVC filter?
1. Migration of the Filter
IVC filters have been known to migrate away from their original point of implantation. When this occurs, they are no longer providing protection against pulmonary embolism. And because filters are made from metal wires, there is a chance the device could puncture soft tissue or an organ in the body, which can result in a serious medical emergency.
2. Fracture of the Filter
In addition to the entire device moving to another location, it is also possible a piece of the device could break off and move. One of the primary risks of using an IVC filter is the breakage of a leg or arm of the device. These pieces can cause damage throughout the vascular system and become embedded in unintended locations. If this occurs, additional surgery will be needed to locate and remove the fractured part and to replace the broken filter.
At any point in time after your IVC filter is in place you are at risk for infection. This risk is higher immediately following the placement procedure and also if the device migrates or fractures. Make sure you are able to recognize the symptoms of infection so you can seek treatment as soon as possible.
4. Permanent Affixation
Permanent IVC filters are expected to stay in place forever, but retrievable filters are supposed to be removable, usually within a few weeks of placement. Unfortunately, there have been instances in which temporary filters adhered to the vena cava because of scar tissue and it was impossible or unsafe to remove the filters. Retrievable filters should be removed as soon as possible, even if there is some risk involved.
5. General Ineffectiveness
Finally, it is possible your device just won’t work. They are not guaranteed 100% and a blood clot could form and make its way past the filter. Furthermore, some believe the filters increase the risk for blood clots. So even though it offers protection against embolism, it increases the overall risk by creating clots that would not occur if it were not for the filter.
